The Living Labs and Test Beds is an EIT Health programme that provides the benefits of Living Labs and Test Beds to start-ups and SMEs, so they can develop market-ready products with high added value. This programme has a wide network of Living Labs, that support innovation through different activities and phases of the value chain.
Applications to participate in the programme are open all year and distinguished in two categories:
- Start-ups with their own funds.
- Start-ups requesting a 7,500€ voucher.
The Healthcare Living Lab Catalonia is one of the partners in the consortium executing this programme, as well as acts as a Living Lab for those start-ups and SMEs with a specific need.
Very often, the patient experience in Hospitals is not a pleasant one. Imagine that you could enhance this experience providing a calm and relaxing moment and decreasing the patient’s anxiety level and pain perception.
VRPharma has developed the first Virtual Reality (VR) solution tailored for hospital usage to enhance patient’s experience during medical procedures, such as blood tests, anesthesia or vaccination. Their VR contents have been designed to address specific procedures performed at hospital.
The Healthcare Living Lab Catalonia is working on clinical validation activities with VRPharma.
Visual dysfunctions are very common issues affecting approximately 4 out of every 10 children under 15 years in Europe. Many of these are not detected or properly diagnosed, causing serious adaptation problems among children and youngster who suffer from them.
At E-HEALTH TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS they have developed WIVI, a new immersive product based on 3D visualization which allows a comfortable and free way to assess the skills and capabilities of the visual system as well as the design and implementation of treatment by appropriate vision training for improvement and standardization.
The Healthcare Living Lab Catalonia is working on clinical validation activities with WIVI Vision.
BestHealth4U is a company dedicated to the research and development of advanced solutions for companies that produce class 1 medical devices. Their first technology is Bio2Skin, a biomedical adhesive that can be used in medical devices such as ostomy bags, drug delivery patches or wearable medical devices, among others.
The Healthcare Living Lab Catalonia is working on co-creation activities with BestHealth4U.
Healthcare Innovation Lab Orbital 40 was constituted as a result of the evolution of an innovation platform called Innointegra, coordinated by the Terrassa City Council who gives priority to the health projects that aim at improving quality of life of fragile patients.
This Innovation Lab has received European funding to boost different innovative projects and is formed by 4 members including the Terrassa City Council, who coordinates the initiative.
One of the projects is the LIVING LAB SALUT, coordinated by Fundación LEITAT. LIVING LAB SALUT is a physical space where to ideate, prototype, test and validate new health technologies. This lab will allow researchers and business managers to analyze the user acceptance of their solutions.
The main objectives of the LIVING LAB SALUT are:
- Stimulating the appearance of new ideas using the synergies of stakeholders.
- Promoting the user validation and open innovation approach of technologies from early stages.
Meet the additional projects included Healthcare Innovation Lab Orbital 40:
- T’Activa: aims at pushing the health strategy of the city of Terrassa and involving the citizens in the definition of a healthier urban environment.
- E-MOCIONAL REG: aims at reducing the emotional deregulation in adolescences to avoid the development of mental health problems.
- CAREF: is a high-performance center in photonics entrepreneurship.
This project is 50% co-financed by the European Union, within the framework of the Operational Program ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) of Catalonia 2014-2020 and 25% co-financed by the Diputació de Barcelona.
LEITAT leads the TEC-SALUT community with the aim of developing new technologies applied to healthcare (Tecnologies aplicades a la salut). With a total budget of approximately 9 million euros, the objective of TEC-SALUT is to create a space for collaborative work in the field of health in order to provide innovative responses to the needs and growing challenges of the health system.
For the sake of meeting the challenges of the health sector, this community has identified priority areas of expertise through which the action plan of TEC-SALUT is organized and defined. Four projects will be executed in the field of imported technologies in health and sustainable healthcare ecosystem, all of them led by a coordinator and supported by a consortium with the objective to fulfill the plan of action.
This project has received funding from the European Union through The European Regional Development Funds (ERDF).
INFINITy enables people with Mild Cognitive Impairments (MCI) to preserve their functional abilities by empowering and extending their autonomy in indoor and outdoor surroundings. INFINITy integrates a set of mature technologies, which have been developed into a commercial product adapted to the silver market, to facilitate the identification of daily living activities and to provide support safeguarding their independence and quality of life (QoL) while performing their routines.
In general, INFINITy strives to cover the elderly with cognitive impairments needs since it encompasses mature project prototypes that are ready to meet the real-world challenge. The primary and most significant impact of the project has been the QoL of the elderly citizens with cognitive impairment and their caregivers.

In the current practice, lumbar punctures are performed to diagnose infant meningitis, and even though this technique is very invasive and difficult to perform, 95% of the lumbar punctures performed produce negative results.
Newborn Solutions has developed a probe that will revolutionize the management and diagnosis of infant meningitis by enabling a quick, easy and non-invasive detection. Their medical device Neosonics is a precision-engineering system that uses high-frequency ultrasound to non-invasively count white blood cell in the cerebrospinal fluid below the infant fontanel, the region of the head where the bones are not yet closed.
